HUNTSVILLE – Huntsville’s multigigabit fiber solutions provider Adtran is helping international fiber networks connect residents and businesses with multigig internet services.
Finland and England’s Channel Islands are the latest to use Adtran’s 10-gigabit fiber access platform.
In Finland, Adtran’s 10G platform will connect 50,000 customers in its first phase; and in the Bailiwick of Guernsey in the Channel Islands, the network will reach 30,000 homes and Guernsey businesses by the end of 2026.
The competition for broadband in Finland has brought about alternative network providers known as altnets. They are spending a lot of money to stake their claim in the increasingly competitive European gigabit broadband connectivity market.
Fibernet is a new altnet in Finland providing most of the country with access to 4G mobile broadband coverage. But while the increased demand for high-bandwidth, reliable internet means established service providers are slowly building expensive fiber networks, Fibernet invested instead in an innovative fiber trenching approach that allows them to build its network much faster.
Fibernet is utilizing Adtran’s 10G platform to leverage the symmetrical upload and download speeds of XGS-PON technology, while launching broadband services for Internet, IPTV, telehealth and more.
Adtran’s supply availability is also a differentiator for Fibernet. In Finland, the ground is frozen five months out of every year. The long winters require well-planned building seasons and hardware deliveries must be on schedule during the warmer months. Adtran offers a comprehensive end-to-end access portfolio that allows Fibernet to order most of the hardware from a single vendor to better ensure on-time deliveries.
“While Fibernet is new to this market, our leaders have deep experience in implementing superior broadband networks,” said Janne Ahola, CEO at Fibernet. “We selected Adtran because of its experience in both the fiber access and altnet markets, and together we make a great team.
“We are extremely pleased with the support that Adtran has provided in our startup phase. We understand that fiber is the only way to supply fast and reliable network connections that can scale with subscriber demands.
“Adtran provides a solution that can help us meet those needs today and, in the future,” she added.
In the Channel Islands, an ISP called Sure (a subsidiary of Batelco) services several islands including the Isle of Man, Ascension Island, Saint Helena, the Falkland Islands and Diego Garcia.
Homes in Guernsey are beginning to rely heavily on online services for education, health and leisure, creating a rapid increase in the use of gaming systems, smart TVs, security and a variety of IoT-enabled smart home devices.
To meet this demand, Sure required a scalable technology to enable its customers to use these applications reliably and seamlessly. Adtran’s 10G fiber access platform will quickly and cost-effectively deliver XGS-PON to every home and business on the Sure-serviced island by 2026.
“We selected Adtran because it was the most responsive and engaged partner throughout the entire process,” said Justin Bellinger, CEO at Sure Guernsey. “Adtran helped us understand how to best leverage its market-leading technology to streamline service delivery and customer care.
“We have a unique opportunity on Guernsey to deliver a service that can support subscriber demand for premium, high-quality services in all aspects of their lives.
“With Adtran’s team and technology, we know we can exceed our customers’ expectations today and for years to come,” he added.
Sure technicians enjoy the simplicity of the Adtran end-to-end fiber broadband solution because they are able to install and offer gigabit services in a very short amount of time while reducing the energy required to deliver those services.
“Sure is deploying an advanced fiber technology paired with a highly-scalable modern architecture that will support the internet applications needed to remain competitive today and the creation of new, differentiated services as the market evolves,” said Stuart Broome, vice president of Sales, EMEA, at Adtran. “We look forward to helping Sure achieve its goals in Guernsey, making the island among the best-connected places in the world.”
