FORT PAYNE – For months, passengers and pilots had a bumpy start and finish to their flights at Isbell Field in Fort Payne.

Now, thanks to the city and the Alabama Department of Transportation, the ride will be a bit smoother.

ALDOT today announced it has awarded $106,709 to the city for concrete pavement improvements for taxiways at Isbell Field.

The City of Fort Payne will provide $35,570.00 in matching local funds for a total value project of $142,279.00.

The grant is made possible through ALDOT’s Alabama Airport Improvement Funding Program. Through the program, ALDOT can provide financial assistance and other engineering or technical services to airport owners regarding the acquisition, construction, expansion, maintenance, or operation of public airport facilities.

ALDOT anticipates the award of approximately $8 million in state funds to Alabama’s municipal airports during the 2024 fiscal year.
