KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Several area schools will get some welcome financial aid to help pay power bills, thanks to a Tennessee Valley Authority education program.
A half-dozen schools will share more than $2.3 million in funding for energy and classroom upgrades with 98 schools across the TVA’s region.
Also, the TVA also announced that May 15 is the deadline to apply for its Robotics Awards Program.
The funding is part of TVA’s nationally recognized School Uplift program – which has saved participating schools an average of 10% on their energy bills annually through behavioral changes alone. This year’s participants will save an estimated 5.5 GWh of energy.
The awards ranged from $10,000 to $200,000 and were awarded based on the score each school achieved by cutting their energy waste and engaging their school community, and a needs-based assessment that determined which facilities could achieve the greatest energy savings.
The schools, the award amounts and their local power companies:
- Buckhorn High; $10,000; Huntsville Utilities
- DAR School; $210,000; North Alabama Electric Cooperative
- Guntersville Elementary; $10,000; Electric Board of Guntersville
- Hazlewood Elementary; $10,000; Joe Wheeler Electric Membership Corporation
- Mount Hope Elementary; $10,000; Joe Wheeler Electric Membership Corporation
- Vinemont High; $25,000; Cullman Electric Cooperative
Robotics Awards Program
TVA and Bicentennial Volunteers Inc., a TVA retiree organization, are investing in youths by offering $400,000 in awards to enhance existing programs or assist schools and qualifying non-profit organizations who are beginning new ones.
Similar to the TVA STEM Awards program, K-12 public or private school teachers and nonprofit organizations serving youth ages 5-18 can apply here by May 15 for up to $5,000 to purchase robotics kits, tools, materials, pay entry fees for competitions, and begin a robotics program.
Applicants must be in the TVA service area and receive electricity from a local power company served by TVA.
