Steve Marshall presented a 2025 Safe School Award to Cullman City Primary School, recognizing the school’s safety efforts.

Only nine schools statewide received the award this year. More than 1,500 public and private schools were eligible.

“Out of more than 1,500 public and private schools in our state, it is an honor to recognize Cullman City School as one of only nine schools selected,” Marshall said. He added that the school continues to strengthen safety and support its community.

During the visit, Marshall pointed to several features on campus, such as a dedicated Incident Command Center in its main office. This allows staff and first responders to work together more effectively during emergencies.

The campus also has secured perimeter gates. The gate arms can open automatically when emergency sirens are detected. Officials say this allows quick access while still controlling entry during the school day.

“These measures reflect Cullman City Primary School’s commitment to protecting students, staff and visitors,” Marshall said.

Schools applied through the Alabama Safe Schools Initiative and a panel of judges reviewed each application. They looked at training, planning, coordination with emergency agencies and the use of safety technology.

Cullman City Primary was one of several schools recognized. Others included ACCEL Academy in Mobile, Orange Beach Middle and High School and Eastwood Elementary School in Decatur.

State officials said the program highlights schools that take safety seriously. They also recognized several other schools with certificates for exceeding basic standards.

Leaders say efforts like these help schools stay prepared and protect students every day.
