Arrest made in fatal shooting at Twin Peaks sports bar

HUNTSVILLE — A Huntsville man has been arrested in the shooting at a Huntsville sports bar Saturday night that left a Decatur man dead.

According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, Jeremiah Matkins, 21, of Huntsville, was arrested and charged with murder for the shooting at the Twin Peaks sports bar. He is being held in the Madison County Jail with a bond set at $50,000.

Ray’shun Markelle Bates, 23, of Decatur, was killed in the incident which left two other people wounded and involved an off-duty HPD officer.

Huntsville Police Chief Kirk Giles said a fight broke out between two groups of people at the restaurant in Huntsville’s MidCity District.

“During the altercation, some shots were exchanged,“ Giles said. ”There was an officer working off-duty, and this was an officer-involved shooting as well.”

According to ALEA, “a uniformed Huntsville Police Department officer was working a departmentally approved off-duty security job for the business when the shooting occurred. The officer discharged his weapon; however, no individuals were struck by the officer’s gunfire.”

ALEA is investigating because a police officer was involved.
