ATHENS — Looking to the future, a pair of entrepreneurs reached into Athens’ history in moving their business downtown.
Athens Alehouse & Cellar, a woman-owned business, is moving its operations to a historic building in downtown Athens. While undergoing construction at the 113 South Marion Street site, Athens Alehouse will continue to operate at 111 W Washington St.
Citing Census Bureau data that show Athens as the fastest-growing city in Alabama and Limestone County holding the title of the fastest-growing county in the state for four out of the past five years, the Alehouse owners made the decision to expand.
“Our business-friendly city and community have been pivotal in enabling this investment,” said Ken and Lori Hill. “The support from various local organizations and government bodies has been phenomenal.”Â
The new location will not only enhance the downtown experience but also support local events such as Fridays After Five, Summer Bash, car shows, and Christmas events.
Alehouse also has its own events, such as Athtoberfest and St. Patrick’s Day celebrations.
“Small businesses are the backbone of any strong and growing community,” the owners said in a statement. “We are excited to contribute further to the sales tax base and give back through fundraisers and donations.”
The relocation involves the renovation of the long-time vacant building at 113 South Marion Street. For the project, the Athens Alehouse owners engaged primarily local contractors.
“The strategic selection of contractors reflects our commitment to supporting the local economy,” they said. “We’re proud to have Bank Independent, AMBL Architecture Studios, Martin & Cobey Construction, Dixie Electric, and H&I Mechanical collaborating on this project.”Â
The new building will significantly expand Athens Alehouse’s capacity, including the addition of a to-go window in the Square Arts & Entertainment District and more than 300 square feet of outdoor seating with a picturesque view of the Limestone County Courthouse.
The expansion will occur in two phases: Phase 1 this year will see the current Alehouse move to the new location, maintaining its popular offerings in a larger space; Phase 2 in early 2025 will introduce a full kitchen, expanded menu, longer hours, and the addition of a full-service bar.Â
“Athens Alehouse is thrilled to be a part of this vibrant community, and we are grateful for the unwavering support from Athens Main Street, Athens-Limestone County Chamber of Commerce, Limestone County Economic Development Association, the City of Athens, and the Limestone County Commission,” the Hills said. “We invite everyone to join us in celebrating this exciting new chapter.”Â
