Athens firefighters help deliver baby

ATHENS — It wasn’t an ordinary call this morning for the crew at Athens Fire Station 2.
In fact, it was extraordinary.
At 8:20 a.m., the station received an emergency call for a woman who was in labor; she was 40 weeks pregnant.
Engine 2 drivers Scott Jackson and Neil Gooch, accompanied by AEMTs Garrett Grimsley and David McDaniel climbed into a truck and headed out.
Upon arrival at the home, they found the baby already crowning. The team coached the mother through proper breathing techniques and secured the baby’s airway.
By 8:30, they delivered a healthy baby girl.
The EMS team then transported the new mom and baby to Madison Hospital where they are both reported to be happy and healthy.
Capt. Chad Green said the baby girl was one of the strongest babies he has seen.
