ATHENS — It is said “there’s no place like home.” And that includes taking a tour of the sites and attractions in your own backyard.
“We often get so caught up in our daily lives that we forget that we are immersed in amazing sights, sounds, flavors, and experiences that other people travel to see,” said Stephanie Reynolds with the Athens-Limestone Tourism Association. “We often don’t realize that we live in our own vacation spot.
“I read a quote once: ‘If you visit somewhere for a week, you’ll see some of what you want to see. If you visit for a month, you’ll see all of what you want to see. But if you live there, you never see anything at all.’”
To help kick off National Tourism and Travel Week, the Tourism Association and the Athens Limestone Chamber are offering the opportunity to “Be A Tourist in Your Own Hometown.”
Residents and visitors are invited Saturday to immerse themselves in the vibrant history and culture of Athens. This unique experience offers motor coach and walking tours to some of the city’s most iconic landmarks and historical sites:
“During National Tourism and Travel Month, we celebrate the vibrant tourism industry of North Alabama, which saw record-breaking spending of $4.7 billion by visitors last year,” said Pammie Jimmar, president of the Athens Limestone Chamber. “This surge highlights the region’s growing appeal as a premier travel destination, showcasing its unique blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and Southern hospitality.
“‘Be a Tourist in Your Own Hometown’ will allow the community to learn more about the tourist product in Athens-Limestone County, and in 2025 we will expand the tours to so many more attractions in Athens-Limestone County.”
Saturday’s itinerary includes stops at:
- Tennessee Valley Old Time Fiddlers Museum
- Alabama Veterans Museum & Archives
- Houston Public Library
- Historic Donnell House
- Trinity School Historic Site
The tours will start at 9 a.m. and provide the opportunity to delve into the stories and legacies that have shaped Athens into the community it is today.
