Athens State hosts inaugural pinning ceremony for College of Education graduates

ATHENS – In a symbolic event that honored 73 education graduates, the Athens State College of Education hosted its inaugural Teachers’ Pinning Ceremony.

“Although pinning ceremonies are traditionally associated with other disciplines, they offer a meaningful opportunity to recognize our students’ achievements and mark their transition into the teaching profession,” said Blake Hargett, instructor of Early Childhood Education. “Over the past academic year, our planning committee has worked diligently to create a ceremony that is both distinctive and reflective of the Athens State spirit. What began as a vision last spring has grown into a tradition we are proud to establish.”

The ceremony celebrated a transition from students to professional educators. The graduates were recognized for their dedication, perseverance, and the calling to teach, inspire, and lead future generations – reaffirming their readiness to shape lives and communities through education.

“This ceremony serves as a moment to celebrate our teacher candidates with the excellence and appreciation they deserve,” said Hargett. “I believe the Teachers’ Pinning Ceremony will become a cherished tradition within the university community, and look forward to honoring the future educators who will call Athens State home.”

During the intimate ceremony in McCandless Hall, education students were presented with a special lapel pin and a copy of the Educators’ Oath, written by Dr. Patricia Elmore, assistant professor of English Education, for the occasion. At the conclusion of the pinning, all the students rose and took the Educators’ Oath.

“The first pinning ceremony for the College of Education marks a significant milestone in the life of Athens State University and in the journey of these students,” said Dr. Alyson Gill, provost & vice president for Academic Affairs and Student Services. “This ceremony will now become a tradition that honors the hard work, dedication, and passion of our students as they prepare to enter the teaching profession.”

Also at the ceremony, Dr. Tina Sloan, professor of Elementary Education, was honored as a Distinguished Faculty Member, and Dr. Shane Barnette, superintendent of Cullman County Schools, was recognized as a Distinguished Alumnus.
