SHEFFIELD – A pair of management majors at Athens State University have been named recipients of the 2025 Edward Fennel Mauldin Endowed Scholarship. The announcement was made at a reception hosted by Bank Independent and Athens State representatives.
The scholarship, designed for first-generation college attendees, is named in honor of late Bank Independent President Edward Fennel Mauldin.
John Jones, a senior majoring in management, and Chandler Rice, a first-time recipient also majoring in management, were in attendance to accept the scholarship.
“You have the support of the entire Bank Independent team,” Bank Independent CEO Macke Mauldin said. “This scholarship carries a responsibility. Many people have helped you get to where you are today, and I encourage you to embrace that responsibility by paying it forward when you see someone in need.”
Congratulating the students on their achievements, Mauldin shared how his father never graduated from college, yet led a successful life and career.
Mauldin said his father’s belief in the transformative power of education remains a guiding principle for the bank’s support of first-generation college students.
“Bank Independent and the Mauldin family share a deep commitment to education and a passion for fostering growth within individuals and communities,” said Athens State President Catherine Wehlberg. “Their support empowers our students to grow, thrive, and reach their full potential, aligning closely with our mission at Athens State University. ”
