Big Spring Park expansion moves forward with $12.48M upgrade

One of downtown Huntsville’s most recognizable public spaces is set for a significant transformation.

The Huntsville City Council has approved a construction contract to expand Big Spring Park East, clearing the way for a multi-million-dollar project that will turn the former City Hall site into a new, accessible green space connected to the heart of the city’s signature park.

The $12.48 million contract was awarded to Fite Constructions Company LLC and covers the redevelopment of the former City Hall property at Fountain Circle.

The project adds approximately 2.4 acres to Big Spring Park and is designed to strengthen pedestrian connections while creating new gathering spaces downtown.

City plans for the expanded park include a pavilion with an integrated water feature, public restrooms, a rustic-themed playground, accessible walking paths, public art installations in partnership with Arts Huntsville and improvements along Church Street focused on pedestrian safety and connectivity. Repairs to the canal wall are also included to improve long-term stability and safety.

The project builds on final designs unveiled by the city in June, when officials presented the vision for Big Spring Park East as a vibrant extension of Huntsville’s cultural and civic hub.

“As our downtown thrives, so does the need for recreational spaces,” Mayor Tommy Battle said at the time. “This property presents an opportunity to expand Big Spring Park, solidifying its position as a cherished community landmark. By enlarging the footprint, we provide an even larger public space for everyone to enjoy.”

Design plans for the expansion feature multiple terraced plaza levels, a central pavilion with a green roof for events and community programs, and new sidewalk and hardscape connections to Church Street.

A gently winding, ADA-accessible path is designed to improve accessibility across the sloped site, while landscaping upgrades will include shade trees, rain gardens, irrigation and enhanced lighting.

A key element of the design is a lower terrace that will visually and physically connect Big Spring Park East and West, creating an overlook of the park’s iconic ponds and improving movement between the two sides.

Public art, shaded seating and water features are intended to balance aesthetics with function while helping buffer downtown noise.

Construction on the Big Spring Park East expansion is expected to move forward following bidding, with completion anticipated by the end of 2026.
