Girls Garage program returns to Huntsville with hands-on car care lessons

A popular hands-on program designed to teach basic car maintenance skills is returning this spring through the City of Huntsville Parks & Recreation Department.

The Girls Garage program will again be offered at the Brahan Spring Recreation Center, giving women and girls an opportunity to learn practical vehicle care skills in a supportive, hands-on environment.

Open to participants ages 15 and older, the free program focuses on building confidence in everyday automotive maintenance. Participants will learn how to check oil levels, jumpstart a battery, change a tire and perform other basic car care tasks with guidance from Parks & Recreation staff.

Attendees can choose from three Saturday sessions scheduled from 9 to 10 a.m. on March 21, April 18 or May 16. Space is limited and registration is required through the department’s online registration platform. Participants are asked to wear closed-toe shoes.

James Gossett said the program is returning after strong community interest last year.

“The strong turnout in 2025 showed us just how much interest there is in hands-on learning opportunities like this,” Gossett said. “By offering additional sessions this spring, we’re responding directly to community feedback and are proud to continue delivering high-quality programs that our residents need and want.”

City officials say programs like Girls Garage are part of a broader effort to create inclusive opportunities where residents can learn new skills, build confidence and connect with others in the community.
