MADISON — A Bob Jones High School student has been arrested after bringing a firearm to school Monday morning.
According to Madison City Schools, school resource officers promptly confiscated and arrested the 16-year-old offender upon learning of the danger through a parent of another student.
“I am writing to inform you about an incident that occurred today at Bob Jones High School around 10:10 a.m.,” Madison City Schools Superintendent Ed Nichols said in a statement. “Thanks to the quick and responsible actions of a student who reported a safety concern, we discovered that a student was in possession of a handgun. Our resource officers acted immediately, within a few minutes, ensuring the safety of all students and staff. The handgun was secured without incident, and no one was harmed.
“Nothing at this point of the investigation shows any attempt to harm any staff or students. School officials and the Madison Police Department will continue to investigate.”
The Madison Police Department said there weren’t any indications the student intended to “target” any student or school staff.
“MPD school resource officers and school administration immediately made contact with, and removed, the student from class without incident where it was confirmed that the student was in possession of a handgun,” the statement said. “The 16-year-old student was arrested for being a minor in possession of a handgun and taken to the Neaves-Davis Juvenile Detention Facility.
“MPD would like to commend the student and parent for quickly reporting the information to us. While there is nothing to indicate at this time that any student or school staff was targeted by the subject, police are still investigating why the student brought the firearm to school and how the student came in possession of it.”
