With Independence Day celebrations approaching, Huntsville Animal Services is encouraging pet owners to prepare now for one of the busiest times of year for lost animals.
The department will host its annual “Boom Proof Your Pet” event on Sunday, June 14, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Jaycee Building in John Hunt Park. The free event is designed to help families protect pets from the stress and fear often caused by fireworks, which can lead animals to run away from home.
“Every year, we see pets arrive after bolting in fear from fireworks,” Huntsville Animal Services Director John Fischer said. “Our goal is to get ahead of the problem by empowering families with what they need before the celebrations begin.”
The event is open to pet owners from Huntsville and Madison County, though advance registration is required.
Services and supplies available at the event will include microchipping, collars and leashes, personalized ID tags, onsite vaccinations, spay and neuter vouchers for Huntsville residents, pet food, toys and other giveaways. All veterinary services, vaccines, microchips and pet food are being sponsored by the Huntsville Animal Service Foundation.
Officials noted that microchipping is required for participants seeking any additional services or supplies. Pets that are already microchipped may still attend and receive other services, but owners must register in advance.
Fischer said the annual event is part of a broader effort to reduce the number of frightened and displaced pets that arrive at shelters during the July Fourth holiday period.
“We’re proud that Huntsville is leading the way on proactive pet safety,” Fischer said. “When we provide microchips, IDs and education upfront, we dramatically increase the chances of pets staying with the families who love them.”
About 200 animals were assisted through the program last year, according to Huntsville Animal Services. Officials expect participation to more than double this year as awareness of the event grows.
“If the community spreads the word and shows up, we can reduce shelter crowding and make Huntsville an even safer, happier place for pets,” Fischer said.
Pet owners can find registration information and additional details through Huntsville Animal Services, including a Know Before You Go” video outlining available services and event requirements.
