Burritt on the Mountain will invite nature lovers of all ages to explore North Alabama’s birdlife during Birding Day at Burritt, scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 31, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The day-long event, part of Burritt’s Explore Nature programming, will feature live bird encounters, beginner birdwatching instruction, educational presentations and hands-on activities for families.

One highlight of the day is a presentation by Alexis Quinn, co-founder of the Quinn Wildlife Sanctuary, a new raptor rehabilitation and education facility planned for Huntsville.

Quinn will speak at 10:15 a.m. in the Folkschool Classroom, sharing information about birds of prey, their unique adaptations and the sanctuary’s mission. She will remain on site until 3 p.m. to answer questions and provide additional information.

From 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Randy Crouse of the Audubon Society will lead Birdwatching 101, a beginner-friendly class covering binocular use, bird identification tips and field observation techniques. Participants will take a short walk around the Burritt grounds to spot local species and are encouraged to bring their own binoculars.

Visitors can also stop by the Burritt Barnyard at 11:15 a.m., noon, 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. for Caring for Chickens, where staff will demonstrate how to care for backyard egg-laying chickens.

Guests will have the opportunity to meet and feed the chickens and learn about creating a sustainable flock. Eggs produced at Burritt are sold in Josie’s Gift Shop.

At 1:30 p.m., families are invited to the Burritt Church for the Tommy Howell Bird Encounter Nature Program, titled “Beauties from the Sky.” The program features a live collection of birds and offers an up-close educational experience. Seating is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Doors open at 1:15 p.m., and late seating will not be permitted once the program begins.

Throughout the day, children can participate in bird-themed crafts in the Folkschool Classroom from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Regular Burritt admission rates apply, and all activities are free for Burritt members.
