DECATUR — As Calhoun Community College prepares for its first-ever graduation ceremony at the Von Braun Center on May 12, the school recently recognized its “Top Ten Most Outstanding Students” for the 2021-22 academic year at the 53rd annual Honors Day program in the Kelley Gymnasium on the Decatur campus.
College graduation is seen as attaining a goal at the end of a journey – a crossroads where students face life-altering decisions about the path forward. These honor students start their post-Calhoun careers with a bright light shining down that path.
Celeste Adair is a pre-engineering major from Trinity. She is a presidential honors program student, active in her community through volunteer work. Her goal is to encourage women to pursue careers in STEM fields. She graduates with 4.0 GPA.
Natalia Ceciliano Martinez graduates with a major in chemistry. She is from Huntsville but still contributes to the community in her home country of Costa Rica. Also a cellist, Natalia’s goal is to become a chemistry instructor in Costa Rica and make chemistry an inclusive experience, especially for women in her community. She graduates with 4.0 GPA.
Josh Couch is a dual-enrollment student from Huntsville and a member of the Cyber Patriots, a national competition focused on protecting computer systems from hackers. He will attend UAH and participate in the pilot program for Regions Investing in the Next Generation (RING), an online high school cybersecurity course developed and sponsored by UAH. He graduates with 4.0 GPA.
Destini Grant is a social work major from Madison. She served as treasurer and vice president of the Calhoun’s Black Student Alliance and is deeply involved in her community through her local church. Her goal is to become a youth social worker who counsels and equips teens with healthy coping mechanisms. She graduates with 3.93 GPA.
Megan Holbrook is a visual communications major from Decatur. She is president of the American Advertising Federation Club, and a co-captain and finalist in a First Tech Challenge robotics team. Megan will transfer to Athens State where she will pursue a bachelor of fine arts with a concentration in graphic design. She graduates with 4.0 GPA.
Vuong Nguyen is an advanced manufacturing, electrical technology major from Madison. She was selected as the Most Outstanding Student in Electrical Technology in 2021 and has been awarded an academic scholarship twice during her tenure at Calhoun. She graduates with 4.0 GPA.
Courtney Nuckols is a nursing major from Huntsville. She is president of the Student Nurses Association, and she is passionate about obstetric nursing, currently precepting in labor and delivery at Madison Hospital. She graduates with 4.0 GPA.
Danielle Reed is a psychology major from Harvest. She is a Presidential Honors Program student and involved in her local community through tutoring at the Madison County Virtual Academy. Danielle was also selected as a 2022 All-Alabama Academic Team member. She graduates with 4.0 GPA.
Katie Springer is a theatre major from Decatur who has performed throughout her tenure at Calhoun. Her goal is to become a high school drama teacher and part of the thriving theatre community in Decatur. She plans to transfer and complete a bachelor’s degree at the University of Montevallo, where she has been offered the Transfer Academic Recognition Scholarship. She graduates with 4.0 GPA.
Chesney Widner is a mathematics major from Elkmont. She contributes to the community through her volunteer service in the Blanket Drive, Winter Coat Drive, and the MS Walk. Her goal is to become a teacher in secondary education, and she plans to transfer to Athens State University. She graduates with 4.0 GPA.
