Carlotz brings largest automotive consignment concept to Huntsville

A new kind of used car buying and selling experience awaits at the new Carlotz Huntsville located at 6561 University Drive adjacent to the Village of Providence. Carlotz is the largest automotive consignment-to-retail hub in the used car marketplace, and they opened two Alabama locations simultaneously in Huntsville and Mobile just before the new year.

Carlotz was founded in Virginia in 2011, based on the idea that buying and selling a used vehicle can be a frustrating experience, haggling with buyers over price or trade-in value and taking a big loss when selling; or trying to buy a used vehicle and feeling like they are paying too much.

According to Carlotz traveling hub manager Gabrielle Lamm, the Carlotz consignment model is unique because it puts the value back in the hands of its buyers and sellers. Sellers get what their car is worth without the time and hardship of selling it themselves, and buyers pay below traditional dealership prices.

“Many new car dealerships have a small consignment department, and their upfront fees are based on percentages depending on the type of vehicle you are selling,” said Lamm. “One of the benefits of using Carlotz is that no matter whether you are selling a Ford Pick-up truck, a Ferrari or a Honda, we charge a flat $299 consignment fee up front to help us get the vehicle ready to market using all the major used car sales sites like Cars.com, CarGurus, and Carfax.”

She said another benefit is transparency.

“We go through the market research and show the seller where we believe the vehicle should be priced to sell it more quickly. They get more for it than they would if they were trading it in at a new car dealership or selling it on Facebook or Craig’s List,” Lamm advised.

Their online portal lets sellers track activity throughout the entire process, and there is a $799 success fee when the transaction closes.

“Buyers too, get below retail pricing, so Carlotz is offering a one-stop-shop that is the best of both the buyer and seller’s worlds,” said Lamm.

The Huntsville location is currently building their inventory and intends to maintain an inventory of over 100 pre-owned vehicles that include every kind of make and model from cargo vans, SUVs and economy cars to pick-up trucks, sports cars and exotics.

They also offer financing, and have an entire division dedicated to buying and selling vehicles for business.
