Ceremony set to reopen soccer facility, christen Loretta P. Spencer Sports Complex

HUNTSVILLE – Former Mayor Loretta Spencer, who led the effort to bring the Alabama High School Athletic Association state soccer tournament to John Hunt Park, will be honored today at a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The occasion: Opening the newly expanded championship soccer facility and christening its new name. With the addition of two artificial turf fields and facility upgrades, the city will dedicate the complex in recognition of Spencer.

The ceremony begins at 10 a.m. and comes just before the AHSAA state championships begin at the complex.

“We are honored to name this world-class facility after the person who made it possible,” Mayor Tommy Battle said. “The Honorable Loretta Spencer was instrumental in landing the first high school state championship soccer tournament in Huntsville in 2001, and she moved mountains to get this facility built.

“With this recent expansion, it will forever be known as the Loretta P. Spencer Sports Complex.”

The grand-opening and dedication comes just in time for the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s 23rd soccer tournament at John Hunt Park which runs Wednesday through Saturday.

The complex recently constructed two artificial turf fields, two plaza areas with shade and picnic facilities, NCAA-approved lighting, digital scoreboards, sound systems and a second locker room/press facility.

The four-field, championship-caliber facility will be used for all multipurpose field sports – soccer, lacrosse, ultimate frisbee and more.
