Chargers mourn loss of Associate Athletic Director for Marketing and Communications Sam Baldwin

HUNTSVILLE — Sam Baldwin, the associate athletic director for marketing and communications at UAH, has died, the university announced.

“We are deeply saddened and heartbroken by the unexpected passing of Sam Baldwin this weekend,” the university’s athletic department website posted.

“This is devastating for all of us who loved Sam,” said Director of Athletics Dr. Cade Smith. “Sam was a great employee who loved the Chargers. Sam made us better. Most importantly, he was a good friend. He will be missed and he has left a void that will be hard to fill.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends.”

Baldwin has been a member of the UAH Athletic Communications office since the 2014-15 academic year, and was promoted to Associate Athletic Director for Marketing and Communications in 2024.

He rose to the department’s leadership team after serving the 2022-23 academic year as Director of Athletic Communications. Overall, he has been a member of the department since joining the Chargers as Coordinator of Athletic Communications in August 2014.

Over his 10-plus years as a Charger, Baldwin has helped oversee an expansive growth in social media exposure for the department in addition to improving video broadcasts for all sports.

Baldwin spearheaded a redesign of UAHChargers.com in 2023 that strengthens the UAH Chargers brand and allows for future revenue development.

Baldwin, along with Tanner Mickey, manages the UAH Athletic Communications office which maintains the Chargers brand through media relations, website management, and social media. The department additionally oversees game day operations for all of UAH’s 15 sponsored sports.

A native of Willoughby, Ohio, Baldwin owns a master’s degree in Sport Administration from the University of Akron and a bachelor’s degree in Sport Management from the University of Tampa.

Baldwin has been a member of College Sports Communicators since 2010. An avid Cleveland sports fan, he also works as an official scorer and game day stringer with the Rocket City Trash Pandas.
