HUNTSVILLE — Mayor Tommy Battle announced big news for Huntsville and North Alabama at this week’s State of the City address.
During his remarks Tuesday, Battle said a 200 mega-watt solar plant is under development on an 800-acre tract near the Tennessee River.
The plant will join solar energy fields across North Alabama in powering the region’s industry.
“Redstone Arsenal has built solar fields, as has Toyota Motor Manufacturing and Meta,” said Battle. “And we’re also working with Mazda Toyota Manufacturing to add more solar energy to the grid.
“These are corporate partners, and they’re stepping up to help meet Huntsville’s energy demands.”
The mayor emphasized the importance of the city’s teamwork with Huntsville Utilities to make the new solar plant a reality.
“Those partnerships matter,” he said. “They matter a lot thanks to the collaboration. This is a collaboration and a partnership with Huntsville Utilities. We’ve been investigating new ways to increase capacity.
“This project will not only help in providing a secure power grid for our future, but it will also continue the goal of clean and sustainable power generation mix.”
The plant, according to Battle, will provide much-needed energy security.
“You know, it’s kind of amazing that we have stepped up to do that when there’s a global conversation going on right now, we are a community that steps up to do its part,” he said. “In Huntsville, we will power our own future.”
