City of Athens rallies for ‘Pinktober’ in support of breast cancer awareness

ATHENS – The city of Athens is in the pink this month – literally.

Athens officials have announced widespread support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, as they aim to transform the city into a sea of pink in a colorful campaign dubbed “Pinktober.”

The goal of this initiative is for residents to wear pink every Friday this month to raise awareness, support those affected and encourage early detection with routine checkups to make a significant difference in the fight against breast cancer.

Leading the charge, the city of Athens Relay for Life Team will be wearing pink every Friday – one of many ways the city is demonstrating its support to the cause.

The Athens Police Department has swapped out their traditional silver badges for pink ones for the month of October and brought back the fan-favorite pink patrol car. They will be taking it to various events throughout the month to spread awareness and to show the community how much they really care.

According to Chief Anthony Pressnell, the show of solidarity is a reminder to the community about the importance of Breast Cancer Awareness.

“Breast cancer affects so many lives, and it’s crucial that we come together to support those battling this disease, as well as their families and loved ones,” Pressnell said. “At APD, we’re committed to being part of this effort, not just during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but all year round. Through our pink badges and our pink patrol car, we’ll be visible reminders of our commitment to this cause.”

Adding to the citywide effort, Athens Fire and Rescue sold limited edition Breast Cancer Awareness shirts. Proceeds from those sales directly benefited the Stacy Wolfe Breast Cancer Foundation, which seeks to support, encourage and meet the immediate needs for cancer patients and their families.

“We’ve had city employees who’ve fought it,” said Relay for Life Team Captain Holly Hollman. “And I know there have been many members of our community who have been impacted by breast cancer, from personally fighting it to having a friend or loved one who’s fought it.

“That’s why it’s important to put emphasis on this cause so that women feel empowered to get the mammograms, do the self checks and stay on top of their health.”

The city invites everyone to come together to make “Pinktober” a powerful statement of hope and commitment.

Residents are encouraged to support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, whether by wearing pink on Fridays or spreading awareness about the importance of early detection.
