City to expand pavilion at John Hunt Park sand volleyball courts

HUNTSVILLE — The pavilion at John Hunt Park’s sand volleyball courts is getting major upgrades to provide more space for spectators at future tournaments.

The city awarded Pearce Construction Co. a contract worth nearly $2.5 million to add a second floor to the existing open-air pavilion and make additional improvements to the popular facility. The project will be completed in two phases, with construction beginning this spring and finishing by fall 2026.

The renovation will create larger viewing areas for spectators and more space for tournament management and officials. The second floor will be accessible by two staircases and an outdoor ADA-accessible chair lift. It will also include a concessions area for refreshments. On the ground level, new terraced seating will be added for improved spectator viewing.

The tournament operations area will also be expanded, with additional concrete work, an upgraded audiovisual system and permanent electrical infrastructure for portable scoreboards.

“This project is key to the future of sand volleyball at John Hunt Park,” said Parks & Recreation Director James Gossett. “By accommodating more fans, we can host more and bigger tournaments, supporting both sports tourism and the local community.”
