CUSA women’s tournament: Western Kentucky, Louisiana Tech advance to semifinals

HUNTSVILLE – No. 3 seed Western Kentucky moved on to tonight’s semifinal round of the Conference USA women’s basketball championship tournament defeating No. 6 Florida International 73-66 Thursday afternoon at the Von Braun Center.

“That was a gritty, tough-fought game,” said Western Kentucky Head Coach Greg Collins. “This time of year, sometimes the year doesn’t go the way you want it to go, but they came in and fought like they were playing to get to Saturday.

“I’m really proud of the team.”

The Lady Toppers were led by Alexis Mead who was all over the stat sheet with 21 points, nine assists, six rebounds and four steals. Josie Gilvin notched her fifth double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds, shooting 7-11 from the field and 2-4 from the three-point line. WKU knocked down nine three-pointers, while holding FIU to three.

WKU tips off against No. 2 MTSU at 8 p.m. It will be streamed on ESPN+.

No. 5 Louisiana Tech 60, No. 4 New Mexico State 55

Averi Aaron was an offensive and defensive powerhouse for the Lady Techsters, recording a career-high 18 points, eight rebounds and five steals.

The freshman forward came off the bench and shot 8-of-14 from the field and 2-for-5 from beyond the arc.

Jordan Marshall posted her 10th double-double of the season with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Robyn Lee also tallied 13 points, shooting 5-for-8 from the floor and 3-for-4 from the charity stripe.

Louisiana Tech will take on top-seeded Liberty today at 5:30 p.m. It will be streamed on ESPN+.
