‘Day of Play’ at Decatur’s Cook Museum is Friday

DECATUR – The Cook Museum of Natural Science is gearing up for Friday’s Day of Play.

The state-of-the-art natural science museum in downtown Decatur provides hands-on immersive experiences where kids can explore, interact with, and learn about nature.

“Day of Play is a great place for families to come and enjoy some of the wonderful activities that we have,” said Marketing Manager Joy Harris. “Everyone is welcome to come and try their hands at a variety of games and activities. A lot of these activities and games will be able to be purchased at the museum store so you can play them anytime.”

The event is free for members. General admission tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for children ages 3-14; senior and military discounts are available.

Harris said the Day of Play is come-and-go from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“You can enjoy Day of Play and after or before, enjoy the exhibits and just make a whole day out of it,” she said. “So we want to make sure that families have a way to engage and relax together.”

The Cook Museum of Natural Science recently celebrated its fifth anniversary at the 4th Avenue location.

“We do have those humble roots from the Cook family that started Cook’s Pest Control, our original founder. It really began with his personal insect collection and his way of training his employees,” said Harris. “And then that became something that scout groups and church groups wanted to come and learn more about. And so he started opening that up to the public and that just grew and grew and grew into the wonderful state-of-the-art natural Science Museum that we have now.”

Harris said the upgraded multimillion-dollar facility with live animals, interactive and immersive exhibits sees visitors from around the world.

“We have had visitors from out of the country as well as visitors from across the United States,” she said. “We hope to be a natural science resource to North Alabama and beyond.”

In addition to Day of Play, Harris said the museum hosts activities for the community and visitors year-round.

“We offer Day of Play usually a couple times a year, usually around school breaks,” she said. “We also offer a lot of regular summer programming as part of a robust calendar of educational programming for all ages.”

The Cook Museum of Natural Science is at 133 4th Ave NE in Decatur. For information, visit www.cookmuseum.org.
