DECATUR – Street murals are known to beautify public and private places by adding color and character to otherwise plain, dirty building walls. They can also memorialize a social or political message or mark a historical event. Ultimately, though, murals transform austere or downtrodden spaces, particularly in aging, urban cities.
One such is the Johnston Street Alley Project.
The Alabama Center for the Arts Foundation, the Decatur Downtown Redevelopment Authority and other community partners are seeking proposals from artists to design and create a mural for the Johnston Street alleyway.
The space, across the street from the Alabama Center for the Arts dormitory, is in the design phase. But city leaders envision the alleyway being transformed into a vibrant community gathering space where art students can relax and socialize.
Flanked by historic buildings and restaurants, it will eventually include areas for outdoor dining, small events, and small audience theatrical and musical performances.
An additional goal is for the space to showcase public art such as sculptures, murals, and revolving displays of the students’ works.
The deadline for entries is Oct. 14.
There is a $15 entry fee and the budget for the mural project is $15,000 to $20,000, depending on the overall size and complexity of the mural.
