DECATUR — The City of Decatur has a multimillion-dollar city improvement and revitalization project in its future.
The city has partnered with Volkert, a mobile engineering firm, for a public meeting tonight on the 6th Avenue corridor revitalization project. The meeting is 4-6 p.m. at the Turner-Surles Community Center.
City and Volkert representatives will be available to answer questions. There will also be small-group feedback opportunities with a project liaison.
“This is a great opportunity for residents to express their thoughts and for us to listen directly to the feedback we receive,” said Dane Shaw, the city’s director of development. “This project is part of an exciting era for Decatur, and I look forward to the impact this will have on our entire community.”
The project stretches for more than a mile through the central part of old town Decatur from the Tennessee River bridge to Prospect Street at Delano Park. The plans for the project were released by the city in February 2021.
Much of the old architecture will be removed to make way for improvements such as raised concrete medians; a5-foot-wide concrete sidewalks with decorative 3-foot-wide brick paver strips; decorative lighting and 12-foot-wide landscaped medians with shrubs and corridor trees in some places. There will also be mid-block crosswalks, 40-foot pedestrian light poles and mast-arm traffic lights.
The project also includes a 10-foot brick Historic District monument surrounded by benches, trash receptacles and bicycle racks.
