Decatur’s Polar Bear Plunge on New Year’s Day supports Meals on Wheels

DECATUR — If your New Year’s resolution includes doing something bold, chilly, and community-minded, CAPNA’s annual Polar Bear Plunge at Ingalls Harbor may be the perfect way to start 2026.

“The Polar Plunge at Ingalls Harbor is all about fun and community,” said Emma Martin, vice president of operations for Decatur-Morgan County Tourism. “It’s completely free to jump or watch, so everyone can come out, cheer on the plungers, grab a warm drink, and give back to a great cause.

“Events like this create core memories and we can’t wait to welcome everyone to this amazing event.”

The plunge takes place at noon Thursday, off the south side near the pier at Ingalls Harbor. Participation is free, and spectators are encouraged to come out even if they prefer to stay dry.

Jumpers will be rewarded with free hot chocolate and Travelin’ Tom’s Coffee Truck will be on site for anyone needing extra warmth.

Mari Juarez, director of Community Services for the Community Action Partnership of North Alabama, said the yearly event focuses on a good cause.

“This is the 41st year for the Polar Bear Plunge, and CAPNA has hosted it since 2017,” she said. “From the beginning, the event has always benefited our Meals on Wheels and More program, and it was important to everyone involved that it continue supporting that cause.”

Volunteers will sell commemorative T-shirts for $20 and, new this year, sweatshirts for $30. All proceeds benefit Meals on Wheels, which provides nutritious meals and support services to local seniors. The program estimates it costs $5.37 to provide one meal and $161.10 to cover a full month of meals for a client in need.

Safety is a priority, with the Morgan County Rescue Squad on hand throughout the event. CAPNA recommends water shoes for participants and children ages 10 and under must wear a life jacket.

CAPNA serves low-income families across the region through programs including Head Start, energy assistance, affordable housing support, job training and senior services such as Meals on Wheels.
