Defense Munitions Proving Ground in Walker County opens with a blast

TOWNLEY — It wasn’t a normal ribbon-cutting ceremony today for U.S. Rep. Robert Aderholt.

But, it was a real blast … literally.

Aderholt (R-Haleyville) joined elected and civic officials today to open a munitions proving ground in the Walker County community of Townley.

“It was a privilege to be in Walker County today and stand at the Defense Munitions Proving Ground (DMPG) grand opening,” Aderholt said. “DMPG is a powerful example of growth and innovation, and it shows what can be achieved when Congress, the Department of War, industry, and the local community work together.”

Since its groundbreaking last August, DMPG has added a 15,000-square-foot Range Control building, a second warhead test arena, a “Rocket on a Rope” test area, and 700 additional acres to the range.

The facility represents a major step forward for this company, for the defense industry, and for Walker County.

Moreover, the proving ground will directly support Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, according to a news release from Aderholt’s office. Redstone leadership views the range as a nearby asset that can reduce the backlog for missile and munitions testing, helping accelerate critical work and improving readiness in North Alabama by providing a dedicated testing location in closer proximity, the news release said.

Also, the entire proving ground is on a reclaimed coal mine and Aderholt cited its economic impact.

“This isn’t just about national defense. It’s also about local opportunities. Over the past year, construction on this site has supported local jobs and boosted the Walker County economy,” Aderholt said. “And now, with DMPG hiring its first full-time Walker County employee, we’re seeing the start of long-term, high-quality job creation right here at home.
“That’s what we want to see more of in Alabama: companies investing in our people, in our communities, and in our future.”
