Downtown Huntsville, Inc. (DHI) announced the winners of their Downtown Project and Event Awards winners during their virtual annual meeting January 21. President and CEO of the International Downtown Association (IDA) David Downey was the keynote speaker. In his position with the IDA, he is a champion for vital and livable urban centers worldwide.

The Veggie, known for their vegan comfort food located at Lowe Mill won the Project of the Year award. Owner and chef Adyre Mason, who was a systems engineer before trading in her functional means analyses for a chef’s toque blanche not only won the award, but she saw her ultimate dream come true when she appeared on Beat Bobby Flay this past Thursday. Her favorite TV show on the Food Network featured the show’s first all-vegan creations.

“With so many awesome new concepts launching downtown this past year, we are super, super honored to win this award,” chef Adyre said.

Concerts in the Park took home the Downtown Event of the Year. Presented by Arts Huntsville and the City of Huntsville Department of Parks & Recreation, the beloved summer concert series in Big Spring International Park in the heart of Downtown Huntsville has shown itself to be an enduring tradition for music lovers and foodies as well. The series features a growing collection of food trucks offering barbecue, Cajun-style cuisine, ice cream and more.

South State Bank Division president Evans Quinlivan won the prestigious Downtown Advocate Award. He was the original founding board chair of Downtown Huntsville, Inc.

According to Chad Emerson, president and CEO of DHI, the Downtown Project and Event Awards represent a vote of the people on what makes downtown Huntsville great.
