Madison County commissioner gives ‘Green Light’ to support veterans, families

HUNTSVILLE – Veterans Day marks a time when Americans put aside their differences and come together to honor and celebrate those who have served the country in uniform.

This year, the Madison County Commission and District 6 Commissioner Violet Edwards are launching Operation Green Light for Veterans. The program asks residents to shine a green light to support veterans who risked everything to protect the country and the American way of life.

The initiative spotlights the issues veterans and their families face and serves to raise awareness about resources that are available to them.

“We must do better as a nation,” said Edwards. “By joining Operation Green Light, we can all turn Madison County green for our veterans.”

As part of Operation Green Light for Veterans, District 6 is illuminating the Robert “Bob” Harrison Senior Wellness and Advocacy Center and the administration office on Hi-Lo Circle with green lights through Nov. 12.

Edwards is encouraging individuals and businesses to join Operation Green Light by changing one light bulb in entryways and porches to a green light bulb. By shining a green light, veterans will know they are seen, appreciated, and supported.

After nearly two decades of constant war, too many veterans are struggling to transition back to civilian life. In 2020, more than 150 vets in Alabama committed suicide. According to the Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs, these deaths represent 18% of the state’s suicides for the year with nearly 60% over the age of 60.

Edwards is also calling attention to valuable resources for veterans available in Madison County.

One of those resources is the nonprofit Still Serving Veterans. Its mission is to honor and serve veterans and their families by empowering them to build meaningful lives through no-cost, veteran-to-veteran career counseling. Information is availabe by clicking here.

The Alabama Department of Veteran’s Affairs for Madison County on Cook Avenue in Huntsville; the Veterans Administration office inside the Tut Fann Home on Meridian Street; the Huntsville Vets Center on Church Street; and the Huntsville VA Clinic in Butler Park are ready resources for veterans needing assistance.
