‘Excessive heat’ warning, advisory issued

HUNTSVILLE — “The heat is … on,” to quote Glenn Frye.

And it is on indeed in the Tennessee Valley.

To top it off, the National Weather Service Office in Huntsville is forecasting “a double whammy of weather hazards today through Saturday.”

The primary concern though is “dangerous heat.” The office said to expect maximum heat index values up to 112 degrees.

“Temperatures will soar into the upper 90 to lower 100s today through Sunday,” the office said. “‘Feel like’ temperatures will get up to 105 to 112 degrees.”

Today’s excessive heat warning is mainly for areas west of I-65. Florence can see a heat index of 107 degrees while the index could reach 104 degrees in Russellville today.
The weather service said there will be little relief at night. Overnight temperatures are forecast to merely drop down into the mid-70s tonight and Friday night.
There is a low chance each afternoon/evening of strong to severe storms through Saturday.
The timing and coverage is still uncertain, but depending on if/when storms develop, this may reduce afternoon temperatures and heat indices, the weather service said.
