HARVEST — Motorists should expect delays during their commute on Alabama Highway 53 this week.
According to the Alabama Department of Transportation, paving will start this week for improvements at three intersections on Highway 53 north of Huntsville in Madison County.
Rogers Group, the contractor on the $4 million Alabama Transportation Rehabilitation and Improvement Program-II project, may begin paving today, if weather permits.
ALDOT advises motorists to expect daily lane closures on Highway 53 from south of Harvest Road to north of Old Railroad Bed Road for the next few weeks. Crews will try to limit the impact on traffic to non–peak travel hours – between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.
ALDOT asks motorists to reduce speed, prepare to stop and expect delays. For real-time traffic updates and more, download the ALGOTraffic app or visit ALGOTraffic.com.
Madison County sponsored the project to install traffic signals at Harvest Road and Old Railroad Bed Road and add turn lanes at Harvest Road, McKee Road, and Old Railroad Bed Road.
This year ALDOT will take bids to expand a mile of Highway 53 from Taurus Drive to Harvest Road to five lanes. Utility relocations for that project are ongoing.
Also, Gov. Kay Ivey visited Limestone County last week to spotlight another ATRIP-II project planned for Highway 53 at Pinedale Road and Pulaski Pike, south of Ardmore. The $1.3 million project to add turn lanes, proposed by Limestone County, was recently awarded funding through ATRIP-II.
Funded through the Rebuild Alabama Act of 2019 and administered by ALDOT, ATRIP-II provides at least $30 million annually for local transportation infrastructure projects across the state.
