MADISON – Studies show that healthy snacking provides children’s brains with the nutrients they need to stay focused. Children who snack on healthy foods perform better in school, according to a study published in the journal Medicine in 2016.
Now, contrast that with statistics showing that almost one in four Madison City students live below the poverty line.
Madison loves smart kids.
That’s why the Madison Chamber of Commerce has teamed up with Madison Visionary Partners to fund the Snacks for Success program for students in the Madison City School system.
The campaign is asking for donations to cover a typical box of snacks, which usually costs $13.50 with tax. There are also options to donate more to the program.
“The Madison Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors is excited about the partnership with Madison Visionary Partners to launch our second ‘Madison Chamber Cares’ initiative,” said Shari Burnum, chair of the Madison Chamber of Commerce. “We are always looking for ways we can partner to continue to create community conversations and grow businesses and this initiative allows us to continue to support all residents to grow to their highest learning potential.”
Donations to the Snacks for Success fundraiser runs until Sept. 15.
“We are thankful to our community and business partners for supporting Madison City Schools,” said Dr. Ed Nichols, superintendent of Madison City Schools. “We are fortunate to live in a great area that works together to support all students.”
Michelle Epling, executive director of the Madison Chamber of Commerce, said the Chamber’s partnership with Madison Visionary Partners in launching a snack fund is one the new and innovative ways to support the local school system.
“This initiative will create a wonderful synergy to continue the great educational opportunities in our city,” said Epling. “We are looking forward to all our members supporting this initiative.”
Melanie Thornton, executive director of Madison Visionary Partners said, “Our hope is that businesses and the community will come together so this fund will have a major impact on our schools, teachers and students.”
