Two Republican candidates have qualified to run for Alabama House District 7, setting up a GOP primary contest between incumbent Rep. Ernie Yarbrough and former state representative Dr. Angelo “Doc” Mancuso.

Mancuso, a dermatologic surgeon, is challenging Yarbrough and pledging what he described as experienced, effective and conservative leadership for the district.

“We need to take a serious approach representing District 7,” Mancuso said in a statement. “We have been unrepresented and underserved.”

He said his priorities include improving roads, expanding access to healthcare, raising the quality of schools and securing more jobs for the district.

Mancuso previously served in the Alabama House from 1998 to 2002 as a Democrat, years before the Alabama Republican Party locked down its supermajority in 2010.

According to Mancuso, during his tenure, he sponsored and passed legislation focused on education, worked to increase teacher pay and helped bring industry and infrastructure investment to his district, according to his campaign.

He also cited efforts to secure funding for hospice services, senior centers, public libraries, higher education scholarships, road projects, prescription drug assistance for low-income seniors and technology upgrades in schools.

Yarbrough, who is seeking reelection, highlighted in a social media post his strong conservative voting record and community-focused accomplishments during his time in office.

Among those efforts, Yarbrough advertised the launch of countywide service days to assist elderly residents and those in need, awarding more than 40 grants to local schools, fundraising and resource support for volunteer fire departments, and helping bring jobs and infrastructure investment to the district.

“I am thrilled to announce I have qualified to run for reelection,” Yarbrough wrote. “From the beginning, we have been committed to doing our utmost to show love, care and concern and to be highly involved in District 7.”

Alabama House District 7 includes Moulton, Hatton, Courtland, Leighton and a portion of Morgan County. The Republican primary is scheduled for May 19, 2026.  No Democratic candidates filed for the seat.
