The University of North Alabama has selected Dr. Joseph Gray as its next Director of Bands following a nationwide search, university officials announced.
Gray will lead the university’s nationally recognized Marching Pride while also serving as an associate professor of music. His appointment marks a return to UNA, where he previously served as associate director of bands from 2019 to 2025.
University leaders said Gray’s familiarity with the program and his extensive experience made him a strong choice for the role.
“Joe brings a wealth of knowledge about music as well as the Marching Pride,” said Provost Dr. Brien Smith. “He is familiar with UNA, the program and the students, and he has a long history of professional and teaching experience that make him the right fit.”
Gray most recently worked at Mississippi State University and will leave that position to return to Florence. His academic background includes degrees from California State University, Long Beach; the University of New Mexico; and the University of Wisconsin–Madison, with a specialty in trumpet performance.
In a statement, Gray said returning to UNA carries both personal and professional significance.
“I’m honored to return to the University of North Alabama as Director of Bands,” Gray said. “My six years at UNA were the most transformational period of my professional career. Leaving UNA felt like leaving home, so when the opportunity to return came, it was the easiest decision I’ve ever made.”
As director, Gray will oversee the Marching Pride along with the university’s concert and jazz bands. The role is a central part of UNA’s Department of Music, which is housed within the College of Arts, Sciences, and Engineering.
College leaders said Gray’s prior experience at UNA will allow for a smooth transition as he steps into the position.
“Given his familiarity with UNA, our band and music programs, and the local high schools that are so important to our recruitment efforts, Dr. Gray will be able to transition smoothly into the role,” said Dr. Ryan Zayac, dean of the college.
The Marching Pride is widely recognized as one of the university’s most visible and celebrated programs, performing at athletic events, parades and community functions throughout the region.
Gray is expected to begin his new role on May 1 as he works to build on the program’s legacy and continue its growth in the years ahead.
