College students across Alabama have until Friday to apply for the Governor’s Office Summer Internship Program, a nine-week opportunity to gain experience working in state government.

Governor Kay Ivey reminded students that the application deadline is March 13, 2026, for the program, which allows participants to work alongside professionals in the executive branch and learn firsthand how state government operates.

“As a former teacher, I know the value of hands-on learning, and this internship program gives Alabama students a front-row seat to how state government works,” Ivey said.

“Each summer, our interns bring fresh ideas, strong work ethic and a passion for serving our state, and I encourage any student interested in public service to apply before Friday’s deadline.”

The internship will run June 2 through July 31, giving selected students the opportunity to assist staff members, contribute to special projects and engage with policy issues affecting Alabama.

Former interns say the program offers meaningful responsibilities and professional connections.

Samantha Simmons, a 2024 intern in the governor’s communications office and a junior at University of Alabama, recently became the 115th president of the university’s Student Government Association.

Simmons said the internship provided valuable real-world experience and mentorship.

“Working for Governor Ivey and her team has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my college career,” Simmons said. “From the moment you join the team, you’re trusted with meaningful work.”

During her internship, Simmons helped draft press releases, media advisories and social media content while contributing to a range of communications projects supporting the governor’s office.

She also said the mentorship provided by staff members made a lasting impression.

“What stood out most about my time in Governor Ivey’s office was how much the team genuinely cared about their interns,” Simmons said. “The staff invested time in mentoring us and ensuring we were learning and growing throughout the experience.”

Applicants must be current college students with an interest in public service and government.

Ivey said seeing former interns move into leadership roles highlights the program’s impact.

“Seeing former interns like Samantha go on to take on leadership roles is exactly what this program is all about,” Ivey said. “She is a bright young leader, and I am proud to see her representing Alabama students so well.”

More information about the internship and application details are available on the governor’s office website.
