Fun Master Mike to keynote 10 years of Madison City Chess League

FM Mike Klein, better known as Fun Master Mike on ChessKid.com, will be the keynote speaker next month at the Madison City Chess League’s 10th anniversary dinner. The event is Aug. 20  in the Jackson Center in Huntsville.

“Kids across the globe watch Fun Master Mike’s videos on ChessKid.com,” said league President Ranae Bartlett. “He visited Madison in 2017 to teach at a fall chess camp, and we are thrilled to have him back to meet more chess kids in our area.”

Sponsored by Signalink, Fun Master Mike’s appearance includes photos and autographs. Bartlett said sponsorships are available; Individual tickets and tables can be purchased at the MCCL website.

“I could not have imagined when we began what the Madison City Chess League would become,” said Bartlett. “We have hosted multiple state championship chess events for all ages of players and have grown the largest concentration of girls playing chess in our state.

“We are the only city in the state to host a grade-level chess championship each spring. I look forward to what the next 10 years will bring.”

The first meeting of the Madison City Chess League was July 22, 2013, at the Rainbow Landing Clubhouse; 14 Madison students attended. Madison County Commissioner Steve Haraway donated funds to allow MCCL to purchase its first chess sets.

Within six months, the MCCL outgrew the space and moved to Monday night meetings in the Hogan Family YMCA before moving again to Dublin Park.

In January 2018, MCCL moved to the Madison Library where Monday night chess continues 6-7:30 p.m.

The MCCL is hosting a monthly series of events to celebrate 10 years of playing chess in the community culminating with with National Chess Day in October. The first event kicks off July 22 at 2 p.m. – a 10th Anniversary Online Rapid Tournament on ChessKid.

Bartlett said the Anniversary Celebration is for all ages and features a menu that includes chicken tenders and mac n’ cheese.

“Please join us as we reflect on the past decade and make some announcements about our future plans during this special night,” she said.
