Alabamians and visitors will be able to fish without a license in most public waters across the state on Saturday, June 13, as part of Alabama’s annual Free Fishing Day.
Governor Kay Ivey announced the event Monday, encouraging residents to take advantage of the opportunity to enjoy Alabama’s freshwater lakes, rivers and coastal waters without purchasing a fishing license.
“There’s something special about a day spent on the water, and in Alabama, we are blessed with some of the finest fishing anywhere in America,” Ivey said. “Whether you are introducing a child to their very first cast or simply enjoying the beauty the good Lord gave us, I encourage folks across our state to grab a rod, head outdoors and get to the waters.”
The annual event applies to both residents and non-residents and covers most public freshwater and saltwater fishing locations throughout Alabama.
The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources said the event is designed to introduce more people to fishing and encourage outdoor recreation.
“Free Fishing Day is the perfect opportunity for anyone who has never experienced casting a line to give it a try,” ADCNR Commissioner Chris Blankenship said. “Fishing provides many mental and physical health benefits as well as access to a sustainable, healthy source of protein. It’s also a great way for families to spend time together outdoors.”
This year’s Free Fishing Day coincides with Alabama’s red snapper season. Saltwater anglers will not be required to purchase a saltwater fishing license or reef fish endorsement on June 13. Those requirements will remain in effect on all other days during the year.
Officials noted that Alabama’s State Public Fishing Lakes will still require a fishing permit during Free Fishing Day, and anglers must have permission to fish in private ponds. Some public fishing piers may also require separate fees or permits.
More information about public fishing locations is available through the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.
