INDIANAPOLIS — About a week after coaching St. Michael Catholic High School to the AHSAA Class 4A championship game, Philip Rivers may be making a return to the NFL.
According to reports, the Indianapolis Colts are planning to bring the Athens native and Austin High grad into their facility Tuesday for a workout to see if he may join their practice squad.
The Colts are in dire straits at quarterback with starter Daniel Jones’ season ending Sunday with a torn Achilles tendon and rookie Riley Leonard, who is having “knee issues,” is the likely starter for Sunday’s game against the Seattle Seahawks.
Rivers, who turned 44 today, hasn’t played since 2020, when he spent his final NFL season, ironically, with the Colts. He was Indianapolis’s starter in 16 games, going 11–5 and reached the wild-card round.
He announced his retirement from the NFL in 2021 and, this summer, he retired as a member of the Chargers.
The No. 4 overall pick of the 2004 draft, the potential Hall of Famer is an eight-time Pro Bowler and was the 2013 AP comeback player of the year. He is No. 7 on the NFL’s all-time list with 63.440 passing yards and No. 6 with 421 career touchdown passes.
