HUNTSVILLE — City leaders are set to break ground on the John Hunt Park Recreation Center.
The one-story, 60,580-square-foot facility will be north of Joe W. Davis Stadium on about 8.5 acres, according to the city of Huntsville. It will include four full-size gymnasiums providing practice and competition space for basketball, volleyball, and futsal.
Additionally, a concession area and restrooms will connect the gyms to the main building, which will feature a fitness room, two multipurpose activity rooms, and office space.
“John Hunt Park is an incredible asset,” said Parks and Rec Director James Gossett. “It makes sense to have a recreation center be part of this growing area. This design gives us the ability to offer citizens more programs, more fitness options, and more athletic space.”
Another main attraction will be 25 outdoor, lighted pickleball courts designed for competitive play, including tournaments.
“Pickleball is rapidly becoming the fastest-growing sport in the nation, and Huntsville is embracing this trend,” Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle said. “The new John Hunt Park Recreation Center presents a fantastic opportunity to add more courts in a convenient, central location, making it easier for our community to enjoy this exciting game.”
Battle, Gossett, District 4 Councilman Bill Kling, and City Administrator John Hamilton will be on hand to deliver remarks at Wednesday’s 10 a.m. groundbreaking ceremony.
