TRIANA — The tiny town of Triana is literally bursting at the seems and dealing with growing pains.
To help control the growth and handle those pains, Triana is holding a Community Input meeting Feb. 25 to discuss a Comprehensive Plan Update. The original plan was adopted in 2017 to guide decision-making on land use, economic development, conservation, zoning and capital improvements.
Last June, Triana issued a moratorium on large scale residential developments. Since 2010, the town has gone from 496 residents to nearly 3,000. It is the fast growing municipality in the state, according to U.S. Census Bureau data.
The 2017 plan, established in conjunction with the Top of Alabama Regional Council of Governments (TARCOG), had not been updated since 1983. According to TARCOG, the plan, “is intended to assist all Triana residents, local property owners, local merchants, builders and developers as they invest in the municipality by providing a reasonable expectation of Triana’s future.”
Triana, covering 2.82 square miles, was once a port for moving cotton and other Madison County produce. Today, its location and thriving school district have made it an attractive area for residents.
Situated alongside Redstone Arsenal and its 44,000 employees and $18 billion local economic impact, Triana is less than 10 minutes from Gate 1 on Martin Road. Its students attend Madison City Schools, one of the top performing schools districts in the state.
Organizers say Triana’s Community Input meeting will aid in developing updates to the 2017 Comprehensive Plan. The meeting is 10 a.m. in the Town of Triana Municipal Building, 640 6th St.
