Guntersville football coach resigns following public intoxication charge

High school football in the state of Alabama just took another twist ahead of games getting started this week.

Guntersville High School’s new associate head coach and defensive coordinator Jerry Fulks has resigned following a public intoxication charge at the Arab High football jamboree game last week.

According to Arab Police, Fulks and other coaches were in attendance to scout Arab, who they are facing during week one. Fulks attempted to get on the Arab sideline by flashing a media credential and telling officials he was with the Birmingham News.

Users on social media were quick to make jokes, with one sarcastically claiming that the coach did “nothing wrong.”

Another called it a “victimless crime,” while others pointed out that only in America could a high school football assistant coach wind up in the local jail for drinking alcohol and potentially attempting to gain an edge on the upcoming opponent.

Arab and Guntersville is one of the biggest rivalries in the history of the state with the two sides facing off close to 100 times for the last century. With Guntersville winning the last two showdowns, perhaps Fulks was simply trying to grab his team an extra boost.

Now, the showdown this Friday night will have a little bit more interest across the state.
