Adkins picks Burritt Coffeehouse series

HUNTSVILLE – You have heard of pickin’ and grinnin’?

Well, Tuesday, the 2022 National Thumbpickers Hall of Famer Shane Adkins opens the 2023 Huntsville Traditional Music Association Coffeehouse Concert Season in Old Country Church at Burritt on the Mountain.

In 2003, Adkins won the international “Home of the Legends” thumbpicking contest in Muhlenberg County, Ky.; and, in September 2005, he won the International Fingerstyle Guitar Championship in Winfield, Kan.

Adkins of Hazel Green is known for writing historical songs that tell intriguing stories and funny and touching songs that tug at the heartstrings.

In January 2002, he performed his “Beans and Taters” on the Grand Ole Opry with Mike Snider, and Adkins has produced six albums.

Nonprofit HTMA works to preserve and perpetuate traditional music, instruments, and styles of rendition including folk, traditional, and old-time music that results in wholesome family entertainment.

The season gets picking Tuesday at 7 p.m. with Chase Creek Strings, comprised of Jack Ellis on guitar and vocals, Sue Huffman on autoharp and vocals, Bill Cassels on fiddle, and Stephanie Clark on fiddle and vocals.

The quartet has performed locally and regionally in numerous bands. Their mix of 19th and 20th century American folk music with traditional songs of Appalachia, Irish ballads, and old-time gospel make them a regional favorite.
