The Historic Decatur Association will host its annual Garden Tour on Sunday, May 17, inviting residents and visitors to explore some of the city’s most distinctive historic neighborhoods.
The free, self-guided tour will run from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., featuring a curated selection of private gardens that highlight a mix of historic architecture, seasonal plantings and individual design styles. Organizers say the event offers a glimpse into both established landscapes and more intimate backyard and container gardens.
“This tour is really about community,” said Darcy Hopkins with the Historic Decatur Association. “It’s neighbors opening their gates, sharing what they’ve grown, and inviting others to experience the beauty of this neighborhood in a very personal way.”
Tour headquarters will be located at St. John’s Episcopal Church, where visitors can pick up maps and enjoy light refreshments before beginning their walk.
In addition to showcasing local gardens, the event highlights broader themes of historic preservation, sustainable gardening practices and the use of native plants and pollinators in residential spaces.
Organizers are also seeking volunteers to assist with the event.
The tour is part of ongoing efforts to promote community engagement and tourism in Morgan County. According to Decatur Morgan County Tourism, travel-related spending in the county exceeded $404 million in 2024, supporting more than 4,000 jobs.
More information about the tour or volunteer opportunities is available at the Historic Decatur Association.
