How a meal at a Scottsboro restaurant gave Irish visitors a memory they’ll never forget

An Irish couple, known as Amy Jane and Scott, expected a good meal when they stopped at Liberty Restaurant in Scottsboro during a road trip across the United States, but they received even more.

They left with a memory that would eventually introduce a hometown restaurant to millions of people around the world.

“We have just had the best restaurant experience that we’ll probably ever have in our lives,” the woman said in a TikTok video recorded moments after leaving the restaurant.

@justamyjane When they say southern hospitality is the best in the world, they aren’t lying! As she and Scott drove away, she recalled how employees welcomed them with smiles from the moment they walked through the door.

“The people working there were nothing but kind and lovely and welcoming,” she said.

The hospitality continued throughout the meal. While the couple was deciding on dessert, a server surprised them with another homemade dessert to sample at no charge. Another employee presented them with a Liberty Restaurant refrigerator magnet as a souvenir and asked for the couple’s YouTube and Instagram accounts so other employees could follow their travels.

Before they left, they were invited to sign a wall where visitors from outside the area leave messages about their experience, and the staff gathered everyone together for a photo.

By then, the couple had already decided they wanted to leave what they described as a “massive tip” to thank the staff for their kindness.

But when they asked for the check, owner Barry Nichols told them it had already been taken care of. They tried more than once to pay anyway, explaining they didn’t even have enough cash to leave the tip they had planned. Nichols politely refused.

That gesture of generosity wasn’t out of character. Liberty Restaurant has been a fixture in the Scottsboro community for decades. Nichols, whose family has long been associated with the restaurant, purchased the business in February 2011 and has continued its tradition of homemade Southern cooking and personal service. In 2023, the Jackson County Historical Association recognized Nichols for helping preserve one of Scottsboro’s best-known gathering places.

The food left an impression, too. The woman called the banana pudding one of the best desserts she had ever eaten, while Scott—who admitted he normally doesn’t like bananas—said he enjoyed it as well.

The video soon spread far beyond northeast Alabama, drawing millions of views on TikTok before CNN and other national news outlets introduced the story to an even wider audience.

Long after the last bite of banana pudding and the photo with the staff, one thing stood out most.

It wasn’t the free meal.

It was the kindness that left one visitor in tears and inspired a video introducing Liberty Restaurant to millions of people around the world.

“I was crying in the restaurant because I was so moved by it,” she said before offering one final recommendation to anyone traveling through northeast Alabama.

“Please make a point of going to the Liberty Restaurant in Scottsboro. It is just 12 out of 10.”
