HPD to conduct first DUI checkpoints of 2026 (Canva)

The Huntsville Police Department will conduct its first DUI safety checkpoint of 2026 on Friday, March 20, as part of ongoing efforts to deter impaired driving and improve roadway safety.

The checkpoint, organized by HPD’s DUI Task Force, comes as spring travel and seasonal celebrations begin, a time when officials say impaired driving incidents can increase. The effort is aimed at increasing police visibility, encouraging safe driving habits and preventing alcohol- and drug-related crashes.

“Our goal is simple — keep people safe,” said DUI Task Force Sgt. Antonio Shorter. “By maintaining a strong presence and raising awareness early in the year, we hope to prevent impaired driving before it leads to tragedy.”

Drivers passing through the checkpoint will be asked to provide a valid driver’s license, proof of insurance and vehicle registration.

Police said checkpoint locations are selected using crash data and information from the North Alabama Highway Safety Office, focusing on areas with higher traffic volumes, crash history and impaired driving trends. Possible locations include:

  • Jordan Lane and Sparkman Drive
  • Mastin Lake Road and Pulaski Pike
  • Bankhead Parkway and Douglas Lane
  • Cecil Ashburn Drive and Old Big Cove Road
  • Church Street and Pratt Avenue
  • Clinton Avenue and Monroe Street
  • University Drive and Old Monrovia Road
  • University Drive and Research Park Boulevard

The DUI Task Force encourages drivers who plan to drink to arrange a sober ride in advance, such as a designated driver or rideshare service.

Anyone who suspects an impaired driver is asked to contact HPD’s non-emergency line at 256-722-7100 with a description of the vehicle and its location. In emergencies, call 911.

The checkpoint is funded through a grant from the North Alabama Highway Safety Office, which supports enforcement efforts to reduce impaired driving across the region.
