HUNTSVILLE – With the holidays coming up, the Huntsville Police Department’s DUI Task Force is working to address impaired driving in the city.

As part of the ongoing efforts to protect the community, the Task Force will conduct traffic safety checkpoints Friday around Huntsville.

HPD said it is emphasizing the importance of safe, sober driving as the holiday and year-end celebrations approach.

“As we enter one of the busiest travel periods of the year, keeping our roads safe matters more than ever,” HPD DUI Task Force Sgt. Antonio Shorter said. “We’re asking the community to partner with us. By increasing visibility, enforcement and public awareness, we can prevent crashes and save lives.”

Drivers passing through the checkpoint will be asked to provide a valid driver’s license, proof of insurance and vehicle registration.

HPD uses data from the North Alabama Highway Safety Office to identify high-crash areas and impaired driving hotspots throughout the city.

Officers may conduct checkpoints at one or more of the following locations:

  • Jordan Lane and Sparkman Drive
  • Jordan Lane and Holmes Avenue
  • Mastin Lake Road and Pulaski Pike
  • Bankhead Parkway and Douglas Lane
  • Cecil Ashburn Drive and Old Big Cove Road
  • Church Street and Pratt Avenue
  • Clinton Avenue and Monroe Street
  • University Drive and Old Monrovia Road
  • University Drive and Research Park Boulevard

If you suspect someone is driving under the influence, call HPD’s non-emergency line at 256-722-7100, HPD said. Provide a description of the vehicle, its location and direction of travel. For emergencies or immediate safety threats, call 911.

HPD encourages everyone to plan ahead. For those who intend to drink, they should arrange a sober ride through a designated driver, rideshare service or public transit.
