Hundreds without electricity after Sunday storms

HUNTSVILLE — The severe storms that rolled through North Alabama on Sunday knocked out power to nearly 4,000 Huntsville Utilities customers.

Huntsville Utilities said its crews worked through the night to help restore electricity. As of about 11 p.m., Sunday, there were about 2,100 customers without electricity, the utility said. The outages are mostly in small clusters throughout Madison County.

“There are approximately, 2,060 customers without power,” a news release said Sunday night. “Crews continue to be hard at work restoring service to our customers as quickly as safely possible.

“However, we do not currently have estimates for restoration in specific areas.”

The utility urges customers who are still without power to call 256-53-LIGHT (256-535-4448).

Winds of up to 70 mph were reported when the first round of storms moved into the area around 1 p.m. The storms also produced golf ball and baseball size hail was reported across the region – including Athens, Madison and Huntsville. Flash floods were also reported as torrential rains saturated the ground.

A second round of storms hit northwest Alabama late Sunday night, The system brought gusty winds, small hail, heavy rainfall, and cloud-to-ground lightning. No significant damage or outages were reported.
