HUNTSVILLE — Several hundred Huntsville Utilities customers remained without electricity Monday following severe storms that rolled through the area overnight.

UPDATED: A utilities news release at 2 p.m. said there were still more than 1,800 customers without power. At 3:20 p.m. Monday, Huntsville Utilities said, “Service has been restored to customers in Owens Cross Roads from Wilson Mann Road south to the Marshall County Line and from Highway 231/431 east to 431 South. Crews are still in the area conducting repairs.”

A severe thunderstorm hit Owens Cross Roads just before midnight Sunday, the National Weather Service Huntsville office said. It was moving at 45 mph and “dime to nickel sized hail” was reported.

The storm tracked east and increased in intensity over Woodville, the office said, with “golf ball size hail and 60 mph wind gusts.”

“In Owens Cross Roads, 10 poles were damaged during the storm that crews are working to replace,” Huntsville Utilities said. “This type of restoration tends to take a bit longer due to the type of damage, but our crews will remain on the job until all service is restored.
“Crews are also working to switch power to other breakers to pick up as many customers as possible while repairs are being made.”
Huntsville Utilities advises customers without power and their area is not on the outage map, should call 256-53-LIGHT (256-535-4448).
