Huntsville 9/11 ceremony ‘stark reminder of ultimate sacrifice’

HUNTSVILLE —- In honor of those killed during the 9/11 terror attacks, local first responders are holding a ceremony to remember the victims who died that day twenty-three years ago.

Huntsville Police, Huntsville Fire and Rescue, Huntsville Emergency Medical Services Inc. and Mayor Tommy Battle will be marking the occasion Wednesday at 7:46 a.m., the time the first World Trade Center tower was struck 23 years ago. During the ceremony, a moment of silence will be observed as well as a sounding of the sirens from emergency personnel.

“It is a stark reminder of the ultimate sacrifice that is too often required of first responders,” said Huntsville Police Chief Kirk Giles of the ceremony. “We not only remember this day as a day that changed our future, but also for our first responders who gave their lives to save others.”

The event honoring the fallen will be held at the HPD’s West Precinct/Fire Station 1. Additionally, all other fire stations will hold observances.
